Wat hebben jazzmuziek en de moord op Patrice Lumumba met elkaar gemeen? In de documentaire Soundtrack to a Coup d’État neemt Belgische filmmaker Johan Grimonprez ons mee naar februari 1961. Twee jazzmuzikanten, Abbey Lincoln en Max Roach, bestormen de VN Veiligheidsraad en protesteren tegen de moord op Patrice Lumumba, de eerste minister van Congo. Eerdere vergaderingen rond demilitarisatie en dekolonisatie waren al in het water gevallen, tot grote frustratie van Sovjetleider Nikita Chroesjtsjov. De grote dwarsligger, de VS, moeten dringend hun imago opkrikken en zoeken hun toevlucht in jazz. Muzieklegendes als Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie en Duke Ellington worden als jazz ambassadeurs naar Congo gestuurd om de aandacht af te leiden van verschillende CIA-operaties.
Johan Grimonprez overstijgt in zijn documentaires alle genres met creaties waarin experiment, historisch besef en revisionisme innig met elkaar verbonden zijn. Soundtrack to a Coup d’État doet je met andere ogen kijken naar het koloniaal verleden van België. Muziek is hierbij meer dan een soundtrack, maar wezenlijk verbonden met de film. De dialoog tussen jazz en dekolonisatie wordt visueel knap vormgegeven, met gebalde tekstinformatie die op het scherm danst in de grafische stijl van de modernistische Blue Note album covers.

What do jazz music and the assassination of Patrice Lumumba have in common? In the documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’État, Belgian filmmaker Johan Grimonprez takes us back to February 1961. Two jazz musicians, Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach, storm the UN Security Council to protest against the murder of Patrice Lumumba, the Prime Minister of Congo. Previous meetings on demilitarisation and decolonisation had already fallen through, much to the frustration of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. The main obstacle, the US, urgently needed to improve their image and turned to jazz. Music legends such as Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington were sent as jazz ambassadors to Congo to divert attention from various CIA operations.
Johan Grimonprez transcends genres in his documentaries, creating works where experimentation, historical awareness, and revisionism are intimately intertwined. Soundtrack to a Coup d’État offers a fresh perspective on Belgium’s colonial past. Here, music is more than just a soundtrack; it is intrinsically connected to the film.
